We live in Maine, which unfortunately is partly known for  it’s black flies. We also have more than our fair share of mosquito’s, horseflies and chiggers.

I hate getting bug bites, but I also hate putting nasty chemicals on my skin. I really hate putting chemicals on my children. Thank goodness their is a company like All Terrain, who specialize in natural products including  insect repellent.

We took All Terrain’s Kids  Herbal Armor Natural Insect Repellent to camp with us a couple of weeks ago. I was kind of skeptical about the products effectiveness, but it turned out that I didn’t need to be.

The first thing I noticed when I sprayed it on my kiddos was the lovely scent. Most bug repellents stink to high heaven, but All Terrain has a blend of  fantastic smelling oils such as Citronella, peppermint and lemongrass. The second thing I noticed was that the bugs stayed away. My kids were virtually bite free!

Here is a little bit of information about All Terrain:

All Terrain was started in 1996 when its founder, Todd Hakanson, was hiking in Costa Rica.  A bottle of DEET insect repellent he was carrying in his backpack leaked.  It ate through his backpack and melted the keys on a calculator he was carrying to figure out exchange rates.  Worrying what the DEET was doing to his skin, he began to research the effect of DEET upon his return to the United States.  What he found scared him so much that he developed an all-natural insect repellent formula.  This formula, Herbal Armor Insect Repellent, is a synergistic blend of five essential oils, which is microencapsulated for release over time.  Clinical research at the University of Guelph, in Toronto, indicates that Herbal Armor is 100% effective for over two hours, over 95% for three hours and over 77% effective for four hours.

The company headquarters were moved to Sunapee, NH in 2002.  The product line has expanded from its modest clinically tested, DEET-free insect Repellent beginning to now encompass “Natural Remedies for Outdoor Enthusiasts.”  All Terrain continues to develop, test and introduce quality performance products to help people enjoy the outdoors naturally.  Look for new products.

I can tell you that I feel better about putting insect repellent on my kids. I highly recommend All Terrain’s Herbal Armor.

All though I was sent the product to review, I was in no other way compensated for this post. All opinions are purely my own.
