The Evolution of Geek

Over the last few years the rise of geek glasses has seen our favourite celebrities grace the red carpet, the high street and the big screen with thick framed geek specs.

When you think geek glasses, who do you think of; Woody Allen, Buddy Hollie, your granny?

Just how did this evolution of geek take place? It’s hard to think of any cool kid who hasn’t rocked the geek look.

It’s hard not to think of one man inparticular…But in my opinion I hold this one man and one man alone responsible for this uprising; Napoleon Dynamite.

This geek  landed on our screens in 2004; a surge of “Vote for Pedro” tshirts hit the shelves and a cult following was born.  All of a sudden, it was cool to be a geek and no geek is complete without their specs.

Admittedly, these geek glasses have come a long way since Napoleon Dynamite’s release.   Rhianna’s glasses are a little bit more chic than Napoleon’s and I’m guessing a lot more expensive.  Now days, every one is following the trend and is sporting the geek look.

The Brits do it too

On this side of the pond, a more recent geek glasses idol is Britain’s own Gok Wan, the face of the classic black thick rimmed specs. If this man is doing it, then it must be cool.

Other famous Brits include Tinie Tempah and Fern Cotton, who don’t appear to leave home without their geek specs.

Some say it’s just another trend but these sceptics should consider that it’s not a recent phase-it’s been around quite some time and doesn’t seem to be showing any sign of leaving. Infact, quite the opposite.

Justin Timberlake, Justin Beeber, Jay-Z  plus all those other Hollywood royals are holding on tightly to their glasses.

All the geeky ladies

Perhaps the latest and most notable example of geek glasses trending is everyones favourite girl next door, Zoe Deschannel in the new hit show New Girl.

A familar face to the geek glasses accesssory in 500 days of Summer, Zoe’s character is holding on to her black frames alongside her framing fringe and promoting geek all over again.

In addition,  she’s sticking to her  retro geek dress style and  managing to make it all seem effortesly cool.

Style advice for getting the look

Trust me, geek glasses are here for a while. If you are fortunate enough to have great vision, don’t miss out on the geek buzz, many of us and even the celebs are wearing the frames minus the lens.

So which geek glasses will you choose? You should bare in mind the traditonal glasses style advice…

If you have a round face choose frames that are square and for those who have sharper, elongated features, choose rounder frames.

This doesn’t mean you have to stick to the same style all the time and I don’t believe one rule applies to everyone. Take Napoleon for example, he had  a rather round face and his glasses made him! Be brave. Channel your inner geek!
