Science fairs…. remember those? I don’t know about your child’s school, but my kiddos schools don’t seem to do Science fairs anymore. In fact they never seem to have any “big projects” anymore. I’m guessing because it would interfere with all the test preparation they have to do now. It really makes me sad because, even though most of the time when I was a student I used to break out in a cold sweat with the mere mention of a project. I still feel that they are a right of passage.
I remember having to construct a volcano out of clay and then making it erupt with baking soda and vinegar when I was in elementary school. In junior high, I did a project to see whether ESP was real or not. High School was all about Biology and Earth Science, so I did projects on frog dissections and rock identifications. I really think my kiddos are missing out!
That’s why I love to take their school vacations and fill the void by trying some experiments at home. For instance, my kids and I have recreated the infamous exploding volcano, we cook together, which is pretty much chemistry. We catch insects and study them with a magnifying glass. There are so many scientific things to do with your child! To get them even more interested, Netflix has a huge array of Science based shows. We love to watch shows like “How it’s Made and Myth Busters”!
Try these Scientific shows with your kids and be amazed how inspired they will be:
